Rubus idaeus (European variety), Rubus strigosus (American variety) Raspberries are grown on bush-like plants with woody, thorny stems. The raspberry is comprised of many connecting bead-like fruits, surrounding a central core. When the berry is plucked, the core remains on the plant, and will leave a hole at the top of the raspberry. Raspberries are very fragile and are considered to be the most potently flavored berry. The fruit can be yellow, red, purple, or black.

The raspberry is indigenous to the Caucasus Mountains of Asia Minor and to Europe and North America. Red and black varieties of the raspberry are thought to be the first to grow wild. The red variety was prevalent in Asia Minor and Europe, whereas the black variety grew wild only in North America.
