Ribes rubrum

Red currants are native to Western Europe, but can be found growing throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The red currant grows on small shrubs that closely resembles that of the black currant. Red currants are palatable, even if tart; they can be eaten fresh without the addition of sugar. Red currants are a hardy shrub. They are able to take root and grow when other plants are unable to do so.

Red currants are available fresh only for a short time in the summer, but can be purchased frozen. Red currants are used to make jams, tart fillings, fruit soups, and summer puddings.
