Fragaria, ananassa
The strawberry is indigenous to the Pacific Coast of the Americas. The strawberry grows on the stem of the plant very close to the ground in groups of three. Not every flower produces a berry The fruit is light green at first and then develops into a lush, red color as it matures. As the strawberry develops the petals of the flower fall and all that remains is the calyx, or the leafy starshaped top of the berry The strawberry is unique because the seeds of the fruit develop on the outside. The strawberry is known as an accessory fruit. (See Berry Classification Chart – Pg. 182).
