The cantaloupe is one of two muskmelon varieties: the European cantaloupe and the North American cantaloupe. The cantaloupe is an aromatic, roughskinned fruit. The flesh of a cantaloupe can be both soft and firm to the touch and is pale orange in color. When fresh and ripe, the cantaloupe possesses a sweet smell that will be most noticeable at the severed stem. The cantaloupe is considered a summer melon and will continue to ripen when left at room temperature.
