Scientific name: Mentha spitica (spearmint), (peppermint)

Available forms: Fresh and dried

The mint family, Lamiaceae, comprises more than 180 herb varieties (including the familiar basil, oregano, marjoram, rosemary, sage, savory, and thyme), and it is at best confusing to try and discuss Lamiaceae’s family politics! Suffice it to say, members of the mint family, native to both Europe and Asia, have a reputation for vigorous hybridizing and indiscriminant reproduction–earning the botanical category of perennial “invasive species.”
