“To ornament the mountain” is roughly how the word oregano translates from the Greek. True to its name, oregano grows wild in the Mediterranean highlands. In terms of commercial cultivation, however, its range has jumped continents and expanded into Mexico–although Turkey remains the world’s largest producer. Also, finding oregano in kitchen herb gardens has become common in North America and Europe alike.
