Vanilla is a highly aromatic flavoring derived from the vanilla orchid, referred to as the tlilxochitl vine that is native to the Veracruz region in Mexico. It is a climbing vine that grows on trees or poles and will climb as high as the tree or pole that is supporting them. In cultivation, the height of the plant is limited in order to facilitate harvesting. Vanilla was originally found only in Mexico and Central America until it was successfully cultivated outside of these regions through hand pollination.
