Atlantic Salmon

Sometimes called the king of fish, the Atlantic salmon is the only species of salmon that lives in the Atlantic. The fish spawn in rivers in Western Europe from Portugal up to Greenland and in North America from Connecticut to Arctic Canada. When migrating to sea, they swim in the waters off of western Greenland.

They will spend 1 to 2 years in the Atlantic before returning to their home rivers, a journey that can cover up to about 2,500 miles (4,000 km) of open water. Between April and November, Atlantic salmon navigate upstream, leaping as high as 10 feet (3 meters) over waterfalls or other barriers so that they can spawn in late fall.
