Scientific name: Oncorhynchus nerka
The Sockeye salmon is one of the best known salmon of the Pacific Northwest and the first to be commercially harvested. They are a fatty fish with deep-colored flesh and high oil content due to their diet of shrimp and other crustaceans. Sockeye will spend a year or more in freshwater, but once they migrate to the ocean, they can be found over a vast area of the Pacific Ocean.
