Blackfin

Scientific name: Thunnus atlanticus

Found only in the Atlantic, from Cape Cod to Brazil, the blackfin tuna is the smallest in the Thunnus genus, weighing a mere 46 pounds (21 kg) and growing to a maximum length of 39 inches (1 meter). Their bodies are football shaped, with black backs and yellow on either side of their body. They do not have a very long life expectancy—a five-year-old fish would be considered “old.” The blackfin prefers warmer waters [more than 68°F (20°C)], and will spawn in the open sea during the summers. Though they are small in size, they make up for it in numbers and readiness to bite!
