Whiting

Scientific name: Merlangius merlangus

This fish is also known as English whiting in the United States. Because of the whiteness of their flesh or underparts, several marine food fish have been given the name whiting. The common whiting weighs on average 2 pounds (1 kg), reaches up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length, has a long, slender body with two spiny dorsal fins, and is a silver-gray color. The common whiting is found along the Atlantic Coast, from Brazil to the northeastern United States. In early May, the whiting will approach the coast and spawn, returning to deep water and strong currents shortly thereafter. The whiting feeds on crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans.
