Scientific name: From the Nephropidae family; sometimes called Homaridae
The clawed lobster makes up a family of large crustaceans, though there are several different groups of crustaceans known as “lobster,” such as the spiny lobster and the slipper lobster, which have no claws and are only distantly related to the clawed lobster. Its closest relatives, however, are the reef lobster and three families of freshwater crayfish.
The lobster is an invertebrate (without a backbone or spinal column) and has a hard, protective exoskeleton. To be able to grow, lobsters must molt, or shed their shells, leaving them quite vulnerable. During the molting process, certain species may change color.
