- Place the cake on a cake board and trim off the excess.

- Start with the sides.

- Hold the palette knife at a narrow angle and follow the contour of the cake.

- Continue all the way around.

- Place a mound of buttercream on top.

- Spread evenly to cover the top.

- Allow the excess frosting to extend over the edges.

- With the palette at a shallow angle, move it toward you.

- Switch the angle of the palette knife and move it away, maintaining even pressure.

- Once smooth, lift the cake and remove the excess buttercream.

- Move the palette around and down at the same time.

- Continue around the cake.

- Place the masked cake onto another cake board, or plate.

- Allow to drop onto the cake board.

- The cake is now ready to be decorated.
