With its distinctive dense and sweet orange flesh, tasting rather like chestnuts, this elongated tuber is unrelated to the potato. Sweet potatoes are, however, cooked in all the same ways, as well as featuring in sweet dishes like pies and tarts. The darker-skinned varieties of sweet potato are often erroneously called yams.
