There are two types of almonds—sweet (narm harn) and bitter (pak harn). Bitter almonds relieve coughing and chest pains while sweet almonds are rich in protein and nourish the skin. Raw bitter almonds contain traces of toxins, so cook thoroughly and use only in small quantities. Consult the Chinese herbalist if unsure.
