Viognier is a gloriously decadent white wine grape that is grown primarily in the Condrieu region of southern France. It is quite rare and thus commands steep prices, which has prevented it from becoming better known in California. Over thirty producers are now making Viognier in California, and there is considerable optimism for high-quality wines at lower prices than their French counterparts.
Viognier offers a gorgeous, seductive aroma, often reminiscent of apricots, peaches, and honeysuckle. It has a lush mouth-feel and captivating flavors, making it an enjoyable diversion from Chardonnay. It is sometimes aged in oak, which adds a buttery quality to the already creamy texture of the varietal.
