Like Kentucky burgoo and booyah, Brunswick stew is a thick, catch-all soup-stew made by men stirring very large kettles with canoe paddles. Like its cousins, it has an early association with hunting camps, a historic involvement with political rallies, and a contemporary association with large gatherings and barbecue. Although there are competing stories about its origins and divergent recipes, all trails lead back to Native American stews of corn, beans, and game like the original succotash and generally via African American slave cooks.
