  • About

Joseph Campbell, born in Bridgeton, New Jersey, joined Abraham Anderson as a partner in a tomato canning and preserving firm established in Camden in 1869. Beginning with canned peas and asparagus, the two men added many other kinds of canned and preserved foods. One of their more important products was the beefsteak tomato, which they aggressively advertised using the trademarked image of a gigantic tomato carried upon the shoulders of two men. In 1876, Anderson and Campbell received a medal for their preserving at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. When difficulties arose between the partners, Campbell bought Anderson out and acquired new partners. One was Arthur Dorrance from Bristol, Pennsylvania. In 1891, Dorrance and Campbell incorporated in New Jersey as the Joseph Campbell Preserve Company, which canned and bottled preserves, jellies, meats, fruits, sauces, vegetables, and other goods.
