  • About
Poppy Cannon (1905–1975) was born Lillian Gruskin to parents who were Lithuanian Jews living in South Africa. The Gruskins moved to the United States in 1909, and Lillian, nicknamed “Poppy,” grew up in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh. She graduated from Vassar College and married Caesar Cannon in 1926.

Poppy Cannon took jobs with advertising agencies and food companies, writing promotional material for Heinz and General Foods, among others. She wrote articles on food and in 1940 became a columnist for Mademoiselle magazine. She later became the food editor of Ladies’ Home Journal, House Beautiful, and Town & Country. Eventually she would write more than two thousand magazine articles.
