The Chinese assimilate less rapidly than most other ethnic groups. Low-income Chinese and those of all incomes who live in or near a Chinatown maintain their traditional health practices and have a lower incidence of alcohol abuse than do second- and third-generation Chinese Americans.
Many cookbooks have been published about Chinese food, quite a few with Americanized Chinese recipes. However, few food books have been published in English about Chinese food behaviors, as have very few research articles. Publications confirm earlier research which shows that in the twenty-first century soup is still the beverage of choice, special foods are still being purchased for the elderly, and special foods are still very popular for life-cycle events and at banquets.
