Butter, jellies, jams, preserves, conserves, fruit butters, and honey were used by Europeans on their bread, toast, and pastries well before they immigrated to the Americas; these condiments were used regularly in America from colonial times. In North America, the Europeans found a new sweetener—maple sap—which was converted into syrup by boiling. By 1664 maple syrup was being used on flapjacks, pancakes, waffles, and other foods.
