The earliest American settlers brought and used their own ceramic traditions. English, Dutch, French, and German imports of ceramics were available, but colonial potters manufactured most of the hand-built, inexpensive redware (earthenware), as well as smaller amounts of expensive stoneware. Although redware was fragile, it was easily replaced and was used kitchenwide for cooking, storage, tools, implements, and tableware.
