  • About

The Dagwood sandwich was the creation of the Blondie cartoonist Murat “Chic” Young. In the late 1930s, fans first witnessed its construction when Blondie’s husband, Dagwood Bumstead, clad in his famous polka-dot pajamas, threw open the refrigerator and built a sandwich based on any and all ingredients that came to hand. In 1947, the recipe appeared in Young’s Blondie’s Soups, Salads, Sandwiches Cook Book as the “Skyscraper Special,” and it included sardines and baked beans, along with suggestions for other, somewhat incompatible, foods. The term “Dagwood” is used for any large, multilayered sandwiches, like hoagies or submarines, consisting of various cold cuts, fillings, and condiments.
