The rise of socialism in Egypt in the 1950s, along with the eradication of the monarchy and by consequence British influence, caused many Egyptians to expatriate to other countries, in particular the United States, to seek political asylum and religious freedom. Jewish and Christian minorities were either expelled or had their possessions confiscated. Because of then-President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s anti-Israeli policies and his goal of pan-Arabism, life in Egypt was becoming increasingly intolerable.
