New Dietary Guidelines were issued in December 2010. The Guidelines are for anyone over the age of two. It offers advice about dietary habits that promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. Among its recommendations are to “consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods and beverages within and among the basic food groups while choosing foods that limit the intake of saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, salt, and alcohol.” Regarding weight gain, the Guidelines recommend making “decreases in food and beverage calories and increase physical activity.”
