This chain, which sells submarine sandwiches and salads, is global and growing rapidly. Surpassing the number of McDonald’s restaurants in 2010, it now operates 35,502 restaurants in ninety-eight territories and is the largest single-brand restaurant in the world, although McDonald’s still makes more money. Originated in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1965, the firm is now headquartered in nearby Milford. The firm, owned by Doctor’s Associate Inc. (DAI), has international operations and regional offices in most parts of the world. The chain offers a variety of submarine (subs) sandwiches that are seen as providing healthier alternatives to hamburgers. Subway offers a halal menu in Muslim countries, as well as in some of its locations in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This is just one example of fast food chains making cultural adaptations to local preferences.
