A major reason for Heinz’s success was advertising. As early as 1888 the company was printing small cards promoting its products. Heinz also displayed products at fairs all over the United States, setting up large booths. In 1899 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Heinz built an ocean pier that featured cooking demonstrations, free samples, and lectures. Heinz placed advertisements on streetcars and billboards and soon became one of the largest outdoor advertisers in the United States. Heinz began advertising in magazines and newspapers during the early twentieth century and later advertised on radio. Advertisements and cookery pamphlets contained recipes for the use of Heinz ketchup that were supplied by the Heinz home-economics department.
