Jollibee Foods is an American-style fast food chain that was launched in the Philippines in 1975 by Tony Tan Caktiong and his brother, who are Filipinos of Chinese descent. The company had a modest beginning in 1975 when the brothers opened two ice cream parlors in Cubao. They added sandwiches and other items to the menu. Inspired by the global success of McDonald’s, the brothers opened seven hamburger fast food stores, called Jollibee, in 1978. The following year, they visited the United States and carefully examined McDonald’s operation. They returned to the Philippines and copied much of fast food system championed by McDonald’s, but they kept their menu that catered to Filipino taste. They also began to franchise the operation.
