Evan Jones (1915–1996) was born in Minnesota and grew up in Minneapolis. He wrote for newspapers, and when World War II came along he joined the staff of Stars and Stripes, published by the U.S. Army. He was in Paris when the war ended, and he remained there, publishing a weekly magazine for American tourists. In December 1948 he was approached by a job seeker, Judith Bailey (1924–), a junior editor at Doubleday. The Vermont-born young woman had come to Paris as a tourist and fallen in love with the city; she did not want to leave. Evan Jones hired her as his assistant, and she later found work as an editor at Doubleday’s new office in Paris. Evan and Judith fell in love and were married in Vienna in 1951.
