Earle R. MacAusland (1891–1980) was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. He studied at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, but did not graduate from either institution. Beginning in 1915 he held several positions at magazine publishers, including the Priscilla Publishing Company and the Butterick Publishing Company, which published books and magazines about women’s fashions as well as an occasional cookbook. In 1937 he was hired by the National Teacher-Parent Magazine as vice president in charge of advertising, and he eventually became the magazine’s editor and publisher.
