During the 1990s the word “martini” became synonymous with the word “cocktail” and, in the early 2000s, was used to describe almost any drink served in a V-shaped cocktail glass, also known as a martini glass. The original martini appeared in cocktail recipe books during the 1880s and was made with Old Tom gin (a sweetened spirit), sweet vermouth, bitters (often orange-flavored bitters), and sometimes a little maraschino liqueur. A drink calling for identical ingredients, known as the Martinez, also appeared in cocktail books of that same era.
