Born in Newton, Iowa, Frederick Lewis “Fritz” Maytag III (1937–) is the great-grandson of Maytag Corporation founder Frederick Lewis Maytag I.
He is a 1955 graduate of Deerfield Academy and a 1959 graduate of Stanford University. While attending Stanford University he became fascinated with all things Japanese. After three years of less than successful study, on a morning in February 1964 he dropped out of graduate school and moved to San Francisco. One of his favorite pastimes was enjoying the ambience at the Old Spaghetti Factory, a North Beach restaurant owned by local character Fred Kuh.
