In 1966, less than a year after being ousted from his family’s Charles Krug Winery, Robert Mondavi founded his eponymous winery in the Napa Valley of California. He brought more than two decades of experience in the wine industry to his new venture, which competed directly against his family’s Charles Krug Winery, located about 5 miles away to the south on Highway 29, the main artery through the Napa Valley. In 1943Robert’s father, Cesare Mondavi, had bought the Charles Krug Winery at Robert’s suggestion, after his sons agreed to his one condition: that they would work together on the new venture.
