The Reuben sandwich is composed of thinly sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and russian dressing piled between slices of rye bread and grilled. Three separate camps lay claim to the creation of the Reuben. In New York the sandwich is said to have been introduced in 1914 by Arnold Reuben, owner of Reuben’s Restaurant on East Fifty-eighth Street. An out-of-work actress named Annette Seelos arrived at Reuben’s and asked for something to eat. Mr. Reuben made her an enormous sandwich that consisted of bread, roast beef and other meats, cheese, and spices, and he eventually named it the “Reuben’s Special.”
