The Rival Company introduced the Crock-Pot Slow Cooker in 1971. According to company records, Rival had acquired a smaller company, Naxon Utilities, which manufactured an electric ceramic bean cooker called the “Beanery.” It consisted of a glazed brown crock liner housed in a white steel casing. After experimenting with the Beanery, Rival added more wire to the metal housing, found a factory to manufacture the ceramic crocks, came up with the name Crock-Pot, and started selling the appliance with the slogan “Cooks all day while the cook’s away.”
