  • About

The name Tastykake is synonymous with individually wrapped baked snack cakes, pies, and doughnuts produced in the Philadelphia area. Tastykake was born in 1914 when Phillip J. Bauer, a baker, and Herbert T. Morris, an egg salesman, decided to join forces and sell individual prepackaged cakes made from fresh and natural ingredients. As samples were prepared, Mrs. Morris has been attributed to describing the cakes as “tasty”—thus the unique name Tastykake and Tasty Baking Company. On the first day of operation in 1914, the bakery produced one hundred cakes, and Morris sold $28 worth the first day at ten cents a cake. By the end of 1914, gross sales were $300,000.
