Estelle Hemans Woods (1849–1943) was born in Marysville, Ohio, in 1849. She attended Ohio Wesleyan Female College in nearby Delaware, Ohio, receiving a bachelor of literature degree in 1872. She married Alfred Wilcox in 1874.

The Wilcoxes were members of the First Congregational Church in Marysville. In 1870, work began on a new church building, but the project soon ran out of money. The churchwomen decided to compile and sell a cookbook to raise funds for their “weak and struggling church.” Estelle and Alfred Wilcox helped organize publication of The Centennial Buckeye Cook Book (Ohio being “the buckeye state”), which appeared in the U.S. centennial year of 1876. The first edition “realized a very considerable sum of profits,” and the church was completed two years later.
