The cheesecloth sold at the supermarket will not, despite its name, work for making cheese. The thread is so coarse that the curd runs through it. I use muslin or a piece of tightly woven cotton fabric. An old pillowcase, washed and thoroughly rinsed in hot water, is my favorite device.
