I have become evangelical in recent years about a bread knife being pretty much the only knife you need in the kitchen. Ideal for slicing through the toughest of squashes or swedes, jointing meat and slicing bread, there’s not much it can’t do. And because it’s serrated, it never needs to be sharpened. I have a drawer of around sixty knives in my kitchen these days, and the bread knife is the only one that ever sees the light of day 90 per cent of the time.
