Sugar Beer for Harvest

‘This was a light effervescent drink much used in harvest time for the harvest men’s elevenses and fourses (11 a.m. and 4 p.m.). Eaten with it was a bread cake made of yeast bread with lard shortening, currants, sugar and spice.’
