  • About

These cakes in the form of an isosceles triangle are made at Coventry especially for New Year’s Day, and are peculiar to that place. It was the custom from time immemorial for godchildren to visit their godparents on New Year’s Day and receive from them a blessing; they were also given one of these cakes. For method of making see Eccles Cakes, Lancashire but puff pastry or flaky pastry is used.

[N.B.—At the first Exhibition of the English Folk Cookery Association held in January, 1931, Coventry godcakes were exhibited by Mr. R. H. Buckingham, 56 Earlsden Street, Coventry, Warwickshire, England, from whom they can always be obtained. Those photographed were bought from him on New Year’s Day, 1932.—Ed.]
