There is a big difference between a patient who is on the mend and one who is ill. A patient that is recovering and regaining strength will enjoy food a lot more than one who is ill and struggling. What these two patients order will be very different. What they need is very different. It is here that you must be aware of differing levels of energy requirements. Ill patients need energy.
They need carbohydrates and sugar. But, here’s an interesting thought. An elderly patient struggles to eat but has no problem with a few chocolates or a few spoonfuls of sweet custard. At this stage of life it’s important to consider that any food they like is better than nothing at all. Would you rather your patients ate something that made them feel better or push something around a plate that makes them feel worse?
