While the Pacific is home to several species of salmon, the Atlantic has but one, the species known simply as Atlantic salmon. It is no longer commercially available in the wild due to overfishing. Farmed salmon is almost always the Atlantic species. It was chosen primarily because it grows faster, and as a result, requires less feed to get to market size. They are, unfortunately, often fed colorants to deepen the hue of the flesh and depending on the source, antibiotics are used. These are good questions to ask before buying.
