See chopped, diced, or minced foods. Mashed to nothing means to crush garlic in a mortar and pestle (see equipment) to absolutely nothing but mush and liquid. Salt and pepper are usually added to give traction and to help in the mashing process. Lacking a mortar and pestle use a wooden salad bowl and wooden spoon.
