If you’re keeping food in the deep-freeze, a microwave is a near-essential piece of equipment. I reckon that most of us who need (and often repeatedly) to lose weight are those for whom instant gratification takes too long. I seek to minimise damage (it’s awe-inspiring how many calories you can consume, standing up, just while the dinner’s cooking) by having a supply of food I can get from frozen to cooked in a few minutes.

I am not going to suggest that you rush out and buy a great number of gadgets. Many of you will already have a food processor and a microwave. I think there is really only one other essential item and it’s a good non-stick frying pan. Of all the pans I have tried out, the only ones (thus far) I would recommend are those made by Scanpan, Alessi and Wollpan. Once I melted some mozzarella in both (not, I admit, suitable to be repeated in a low-fat context) and found that I could clean them out just by wiping with kitchen towel. I think that’s a fairly conclusive test. Neither is cheap, but either will save you a great deal of grief (and calories) in the long run.
