British, with the only notable imports being early new potatoes; most come from North Africa and the Mediterranean but the best are fabulous Jersey Royals. The other truly exquisite variety that is reasonably widely available during its short late summer and autumn season is the pink fir apple. This is long and small, best used in salads.
As with apples, there are hundreds of varieties, each with its particular character. And, although the same half dozen or so comparatively reliable sorts tend to crop up in the shops, there seems to be more choice than a few years ago.
