Pimpinella anisum (‘sweet jinten’). Anise came to Java before AD 1200, though it is not certain whether it was actually grown there at that time or imported from India. Like other useful Umbelliferae that we use in cooking (see jinten, adas, adas cina), jinten manis provides seeds containing an aromatic oil.
