Spondias cytherea. This looks a bit like a cross between a plum and a green apple. It is about the size and shape of a hen’s egg, and you peel it, like an apple, with a knife. The flesh is firm, and in the centre there is a single, spiny seed. You can cut up a kedondong like an apple to eat it raw, and it has a pleasantly sour flavour. Stewed, it makes a very passable imitation of apple sauce to eat with roast pork.
