Flavour of Japanese beer

Appears in
The Japanese Cookbook

By Emi Kazuko and Yasuko Fukuoka

Published 2024

  • About
The Japanese cherish nothing more than a glass of ice-cold lager on hot, humid summer days, and the vivid and crisp Japanese lager meets this thirst. Westerners may find Japanese lager a little hoppy. There are several types including canned draught beer, but Asahi Super Dry, Kirin Ichiban-shibori, Sapporo Black Label and Suntory Malt are the most popular brand names. These are normally available at Japanese restaurants and supermarkets, food halls of good department stores and some larger supermarkets. An even hoppier, low-malt beer has also been developed in Japan, but is not available abroad.
