  • About
During the meal, Japanese place hashi crossways on a hashi rest or on a dish, and never directly on the table. The hashi rest is a boat-shaped piece of porcelain, metal or wood (which may be lacquered), about 5cm/2in long.

Hashi come in various sizes, colours and materials. Rests are used to avoid placing hashi on the table.
